Two of Britain’s greatest painters, J.M.W. Turner and John Constable were also the greatest of rivals. Born within a year of each other, both used landscape painting to reflect the changing world around them. Exhibition on Screen is bringing Tate Britain’s ground-breaking exhibition of their work to the big screen for the first time, allowing audiences to see these artists side-by-side.
To celebrate our screening at Bishop Auckland Town Hall, join artist Jayne Blacklock over two art workshops held before and after the screening.
In workshop one, held on Tuesday 3 March from 6.30pm to 9.00pm, we’ll look at the differences between Turner’s and Constable’s work, once described by a critic as, ‘like fire and water’. Using images taken from their sketchbooks, we’ll use a range of drawing equipment to experiment and render a range of landscape drawings, influenced by both artists’ mark making, techniques and styles.
In workshop two, on Tuesday 17 March 2026, 6.30pm to 9.00pm, held after the screening of Exhibition on Screen: Turner and Constable, we will look at producing our own landscape drawings influenced by the film and work in session one.
All materials for both workshops will be provided.
Tickets
£30 (both workshops and ticket for screening)
