Bishop United: A Radio Play

Bishop United

After suffering the most devastating disaster the footballing world has ever experienced, the Munich Air Disaster of 1958, Manchester United’s famous ‘Busby Babes’ are in tatters. Eight of their players have died, many more are injured and their manager Matt Busby is on his deathbed. What’s more, the football league is threatening to kick United out if they can’t meet their fixture commitments.

United’s assistant manager Jimmy Murphy is left to pick up the pieces. With no money to sign any more professional players jimmy desperately turns to small town amateur football club Bishop Auckland for help. The club generously offer three of their best players: Bob Hardisty, Derek Lewin and Warren Bradley. But, will these players be enough to help Manchester cling on to their top flight status or will they crumble under the pressure?

This is the previously untold story of how three amateur footballers ended up playing for one of the world’s most famous clubs when the stakes were at their highest, using a dynamic mix of archive interviews and footage, home videos, modern interviews and emotionally charged personal stories.
