For Michelangelo, drawing was fundamental to his work, using it to capture reality as he saw it. A prolific drawer of the human figure, a popular practice with Florentine artists at the time, Michelangelo took his studies to a new level making his work appear real through keen observation and producing drawings for designing both two and three dimensional objects. Distrustful of others and protective of his ideas, Michelangelo burned large quantities of his drawings over the course of his life and for such a prolific artist, so few of these drawings remain. More than 450 years since his death, Michelangelo’s drawings are still valued today for their extraordinary skill.
To celebrate Bishop Auckland Town Hall’s screening of Michelangelo: Love & Death, a film exploring the tempestuous life of this enigmatic artist, his relationships with his contemporaries and his artistic legacy, join artist Jayne Blacklock over two workshops focusing on drawing the human figure, inspired by this great master’s work.
First workshop
Tuesday 13 May, 6.30pm to 9.00pm
We’ll look at how to draw the human figure, including basic rules of proportion and different approaches using a range of drawing materials including pencil, charcoal and ink.
Second workshop
Tuesday 27 May, 6.30pm to 9.00pm
Held after our screening of Michelangelo: Love & Death, participants will take part in a life drawing session with a life model putting their knowledge from session one to good use.
To immerse yourself fully, it is recommended that you attend the first and second workshop as well as the exhibition screening, but workshops will be standalone. Please add tickets for the first workshop, second workshop and screening to your basket ahead of booking.
No painting experience is needed, and all ability levels are most welcome as you will be guided through the process by an encouraging and experienced teacher.
Age restriction: 18+ (advisory: second workshop will have nudity due to use of a life model)
